Caccuri: overing the village between Tradition e Culture

Caccuri is an enchanting Medieval Village located in the Province of Crotone, rising among green hills and lush forests, offering a natural spectacle of great beauty. Recognised as one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Italy’, Caccuri is an ideal destination for those who love history, culture and tranquillity.

Caccuri is a hidden gem that enchants visitors with its authenticity, history and natural beauty. A visit to this village offers a journey back in time, between ancient walls and traditions that have survived unchanged for centuries.

The medieval name Caccurio (in Latin Caccurius) may refer to the Greek name Kakouri, or to the Latin Cacumina, and means ‘summit on which the village stands’. The Greek origin would be proven by the presence, before the Normans, of three Basilian Monasteries.

Main Attractions di Caccuri

Historical Centre: The Medieval Village of Caccuri is a labyrinth of cobbled streets, stairways and alleys, with stone houses and small squares that tell centuries of history. Walking through the Historical Centre, one can discover evocative corners and picturesque views, along with buildings of historical interest such as ancient churches. The cobbled streets of Caccuri are an invitation to stroll unhurriedly, discovering sriking corners, stone houses with flowering balconies and panoramic views of the Calabrian countryside.

The walk through the Historic Centre passes through very special and fascinating spaces, including the Vico Degli Artisti (Artists’ Lane), a street where the dedications of famous people who came to Caccuri for the Literature Prize are to be found; the Vicolo Degli Innamorati (Lovers’Lane); the Rione Judeca (Judeca District); and the former Jewish Synagogue.

Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, a 13th-century building with a fascinating Romanesque Portal. Located in the heart of the village, this 16th-century church is famous for its green marble high altar and the frescoes decorating the side chapels.  Restorations have not respected the colours, but the works are important as they are testimonies of sacred art by local authors, including Santanna and son (painters of the 18th century). We admire works depicting the Last Supper (with a grim Judas in the foreground, a very unusual detail), St Joseph, Mary crushing a snake and various triptychs, which were once carried in processions. The Baptismal Font, made of wood and granite, worked by Caccura craftsmen, is remarkable. The Ancient Monastery, attached to the Mother Church, offers an interesting tour through the religious history of the village. The Cloister and The Ancient Monastic Cells are among the most fascinating points. The complex is a remarkable example of Calabrian Religious Achitecture, with a mix of Renaissance and Baroque elements due to its particular history.

Church of the Holy Rosary, known for its frescoes and sacred artwork.

Piazza Umberto I:The beating heart of the village, Piazza Umberto I is a meeting place for the inhabitants and an ideal starting point for visiting the village. From here one can easily access the castle and Caccuri’s other main attractions.

Events and Traditions: Caccuri is famous for its Cultural and Folklore Events, in particular the Caccuri Literary Prize, held every summer. During this event, the village comes alive with Literary Debates, Shows and Cultural Events celebrating Literature and The Arts. Now in its Thirteenth Edition, the Prize attracts every year intellectuals, journalists and writers who animate the Italian Cultural Debate and who come to one of the Most Picturesque Villages in the South. The Caccuri Prize also aims to enhance The Territory by becoming an attractive destination for a significant number of tourists. The public will have the opportunity to discover new literary talents, meet established authors and take part in stimulating debates on topical and relevant issues.

Nature and Trails: Caccuri is surrounded by unspoilt nature, which offers numerous opportunities for hiking and walking. The oak and chestnut forests and scenic trails are ideal for those who wish to immerse themselves in the greenery and discover the local flora and fauna. The nearby Neto River also offers picturesque scenery and perfect places for picnics and relaxation.
